A cognitive approach to resolving some types of nominal ellipses

Abstract

This paper is devoted to describing cognitive rules for the formation of nominal and verbal ellipses in the Russian language, as well as syntactic regularities of the functioning of these types of ellipses. The structure of attributive noun phrases is analyzed, their composition is described, and ordinal relations between modifiers are revealed. On the basis of this knowledge, the general principles of resolving nominal and verbal ellipses in the Russian language are given. Algorithms for solving some types of ellipses of noun phrases are proposed. Algorithms are illustrated by a large number of examples. The possibilities for the development of a cognitive approach to the analysis and resolution of ellipses and the practical application of the proposed algorithms are considered.
